Bài 1

Reported Speech (statement & questions) (Câu gián tiếp (câu khẳng định và câu hỏi))

We use reported speech to report what someone said.

(Chúng ta dùng câu trần thuật để tường thuật những gì người khác nói.)

When we change direct speech to reported speech:

(Khi chúng ta đổi từ dạng trực tiếp sang gián tiếp:)

• For statements, use reporting verbs said/ said to/told to report what people said in the past.

(Với câu khẳng định, dùng các động từ tường thuật như said/ said to/told để kể lại những gì người khác nói trong quá khứ.)

Phoebe said to me, "I find AI very interesting."

→ Phoebe said/said to me/told me (that) she found AI very interesting.

(Phoebe nói với tôi rằng cô ấy thấy AI rất thú vị.)

• For Yes/No questions, use asked and if/ whether to report questions.

(Với câu hỏi Đúng/Sai, dùng asked và if/whether để tường thuật câu hỏi.)

"Have you ever used an AI app?" he asked me.

→ He asked me if/whether I had ever used an AI app.

(Anh ta hỏi tôi liệu tôi đã bao giờ sử dụng ứng dụng AI chưa.)

• For Wh-questions, use the same question words as in the direct questions.

(Với câu hỏi có từ hỏi Wh-, dùng đúng từ hỏi trong câu hỏi trực tiếp.)

"Where did you download your navigation app from?" he asked me.

→ He asked me where I had downloaded my navigation app from.

(Anh ta hỏi tôi rằng tôi đã tải ứng dụng chỉ đường ở đâu.)

• Change the subject pronouns, object pronouns, possessive adjectives and time words/expressions.

(Đổi các đại từ chủ ngữ, đại từ tân ngữ, tính từ sở hữu và các từ chỉ thời gian.)

 "I will show you how to use the assistant tomorrow," Joe said to me.

→ Joe said to me (that) he would show me how to use the digital assistant the following day.

• Change the verb tenses:

We keep the verb tenses when: (Chúng ta giữ nguyên thì của động từ khi:)

• The reporting verb is in the present simple, future or present perfect tense.

(Động từ tường thuật ở thì hiện tại đơn, tương lai hoặc hiện tại hoàn thành.)

→ Jo says (that) he likes AI apps.

• The direct speech is in conditionals type 2 or type 3.

(Lời nói trực tiếp trong câu điều kiện loại 2 và loại 3.)

Tom said to Mary, “If I were you, I would buy that speaking coach app.”

→ Tom said to Mary (that) if he were her, he would buy that speaking coach app.

(Tom nói với Mary rằng nếu anh là cô ấy thì anh sẽ mua ứng dụng luyện nói.)

(Tôi hỏi AIlan liệu anh ta có học ngành rô bốt nếu anh ta học đại học vào năm sau không.)

Giải thích: AIlan là nam, đổi you and he, đổi next year thành the following year, đổi thì hiện tại đơn (you go to university) thành quá khứ đơn (he went to university), đổi will V0 (Will you study robotics) thành would V0 (he would study robotics), chú ý câu hỏi trong câu trực tiếp phải viết lại thành câu khẳng định trong câu gián tiếp.

5. They asked the scientist how AI had changed human society in the previous decade.

(Họ hỏi các nhà khoa học rằng AI đã thay đổi xã hội loài người như thế nào trong thập kỉ trước.)

Giải thích: đổi last decade thành the previous decade, đổi hiện tại hoàn thành (How has AI changed human society) thành quá khứ hoàn thành (how AI had changed human society), chú ý câu hỏi trong câu trực tiếp phải viết lại thành câu khẳng định trong câu gián tiếp.

Reported speech (orders, offers, advice, suggestions, etc.) (Câu trần thuật (mệnh lệnh, đề nghị, lời khuyên, gợi ý v.v)

To report orders, offers, advice, suggestions, etc., we can use:

• reporting verb + (not) to-infinitive

(động từ tường thuật + (not) + to V)

offer, promise, refuse, threaten, etc.

(đề nghị, hứa hẹn, từ chối, đe doạ v.v.)

"I'll help you download a navigation app," Ann said to me.

→ An offered to help me download a navigation app.

(An đề nghị giúp tôi tải ứng dụng chỉ đường xuống.)

• reporting verb + object + (not) to-infinitive

(động từ tường thuật + tân ngữ + (not) + to V)

tell, ask, order, request, advise, instruct, invite, remind, warn, encourage, persuade, etc.

(kể, hỏi, ra lệnh, yêu cầu, khuyên nhủ, hướng dẫn, mời, nhắc nhở, cảnh cáo, khuyến khích, thuyết phục v.v)

"Don't touch the Mars rover," the guide said to tie visitors.

→ The guide warned the visitors not to touch the Mars rover.

(Người hướng dẫn lưu ý các du khách không được chạm vào rô bốt du hành sao Hoả.)

• reporting verb + that clause with should/ subjunctive

(động từ tường thuật + that + mệnh đề với should/thể giả định)

demand, recommend, suggest, propose, etc.

(yêu cầu, gợi ý, đề nghị, đề xuất v.v)

We should read more reviews before buying tie app," Ben said.

→ Ben recommended that we should read/read more reviews before buying the app.

(Ben gợi ý rằng chúng ta nên đọc nhiều đánh giá hơn trước khi mua ứng dụng.)

• reporting verb + (object) + to-infinitive or that clause with should/subjunctive

(động từ tường thuật + (tân ngữ) + to V hoặc that + mệnh đề với should/thể giả định)

promise, demand, request, advise

(hứa hẹn, yêu cầu, yêu cầu, khuyên nhủ)

"I will not touch the Mars rovers " the man said.

→ The man promised not to touch/ (that) he would not touch the Mars rovers.

(Người đàn ông hứa sẽ không chạm vào rô bốt du lịch sao Hoả.)

She said, "You should use diet tracker app."

→ She advised me to use/ (that) I(should) use a diet tracker app.

(Cô ấy khuyên tôi dùng một ứng dụng theo dõi chế độ ăn.)

• reporting verb + -ing form or that clause with should/subjunctive

(động từ tường thuật + Ving hoặc that + mệnh đề với should/thể giả định)

suggest, recommend, propose, advise

→ He suggested/ advised doing/(that) we should do some research on AI.
