Adjectives which are only used after a linking verb (appear, become, feel, etc.) often describe feelings or begin with 'a' (asleep, alive, alone, etc.). Your dictionary should tell you if an adjective cannot go before a noun.

afraid /əˈfreɪd/ adj. [not before noun]

1 feeling fear; frightened because you think that you might be hurt or suffer: Don't be afraid.

~ of sb/sth It's all over. There's nothing to be afraid of now.

Are you afraid of spiders?
