THE DAILY LIFE OF A JAPANESE TEENAGER

Akari is 13 years old. She lives in Osaka with her family. Every morning, she has breakfast at a low table which is called a ‘kotatsu’. She often has steamed rice, miso soup and grilled fish, then she completes her breakfast with a cup of hot green tea. After breakfast, she walks to school. It only takes five minutes because her school is so close to her house. She goes to school from Monday to Friday and sometimes, Saturday mornings, too. Her favourite subjects are art and maths. When Akari has free time, she enjoys playing all kinds of sport. Table tennis is her favourite at the moment. She loves table tennis because it’s an indoor sport, so she can play whether it’s raining or snowing outside. Both her brothers love this sport too, so she usually plays against one of them. Ben: Yes, I sat next to a boy named Liam. He is of medium height and quite chubby. He’s very funny. He made me laugh a lot with his jokes. And a pretty girl behind me, her name is Amy.

Mum: What’s she like?

Ben: She’s shy and doesn’t talk much. But she’s really generous. She shared her biscuits with me during the break. And there is also a Chinese boy in my class. His name is Haoyu.

Mum: This’s interesting. Did you talk to him?
