50 years back in time and even before that, in the absence of the Internet and various hi-tech toys, the entertainment world used to be so different from what it is nowadays. Running wild on the pastures, and bathing in the river, children back then saw nature as their playground and were curious to explore and enjoy it in their own creative ways. They found small objects around them to make toys. Boys used branches as swords for mock battles while girls used them as chopsticks to play imaginary restaurants. In this way, children enjoyed themselves on the way to school, during school breaks, and even when they were herding buffaloes. At that time, tug of war, hide and seek, and skipping were popular games. Some have even made it through to today.

The fact that those popular games which were meant to be played in groups made it easier and faster for children to make friends. Moreover, people rarely moved away from their hometown, so childhood bonds were even stronger as children grew up playing together all their life.More than 35,000 staff and volunteers with the Red Cross Society of China responded to the disaster by distributing food, water, tents and other essential items. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are providing 100,000 tents to help those in need.

            For formal ceremonies, men would have two additional items, a long gown with slits on either side, and a turban, usually in black or brown made of cotton or silk. In feudal times, there were strict dress codes. Ordinary people were not allowed to wear clothes with dyes rather than black, brown or white. Costumes in yellow were reserved for the King. Those in purple and red were reserved for high ranking court officials, while dresses in blue were exclusively worn by petty court officials. Men’s dress has gradually changed along with social development.

            The traditional set of a long gown and turban gave way to modern, looking suits, while business shirts and trousers have replaced traditional long-sleeved shirts and wide trousers. LIFE IN A BOX

An old postcard, a map to a party, used postage stamps, a magazine, a piece of junk mail, some wrapping paper and ribbon ... Does this sound like a work of art or a load of old rubbish? In fact, these are objects from a time capsule created by the world’s most famous Pop artist, Andy Warhol. Before he died in 1987, Andy Warhol had filled more than 600 boxes with hundreds of thousands of objects from his everyday life. Even when he was very young, Warhol liked collecting things. At the age of nine, he collected photographs of film stars. There’s nothing unusual about that. However, his later collections are truly astonishing. From 1974 onwards, he always kept a brown cardboard box next to his desk. Whether it was a letter from a film star or a receipt for some shopping, if he didn’t want to get rid of an object, he put it into the box. As soon as he had finished a box, he closed it, wrote the date on it and started another.

Warhol thought that the boxes were valuable.

‘Some day I’ll sell them for $4,000 or $5,000 apiece,’ he wrote in his diary in 1986. Many people agree with him. The boxes are now at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, USA. In 2014, Warhol fans bought tickets to watch the opening of one of the final boxes. One fan had paid $30,000 to help open it. Was it worth it? It’s true that many of the items are quite ordinary and appear worthless, but some of the boxes also contain rare objects: a drawing that Warhol never exhibited, a photograph that he took ... Some of the items are simply bizarre: a fan’s toenail clippings, a piece of pizza, even a mummified foot. Warhol’s art put everyday objects in the spotlight to make a comment on consumer society. Now, after his death, the everyday objects of Warhol’s own life tell us a lot about the artist and society in the 20th century. So, was Warhol just a hoarder or an important chronicler of his time?

If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we would probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we kept a book and wrote in it an account of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer. In a way, this is similar to history.

Most people are proud to tell you what their ancestors did in the past. We may call this remembered history. But many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes people kept a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never any written record because the people of that time and place did not know how to write. For example, we know a lot about the people who lived in China about 2,500 years ago because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know little about the people who lived just 200 years ago in central Africa, because they had no writing system.

Sometimes, even if people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs, dances, and stories have been made about the most important past events, and these have been sung about, acted and told for generations.

My Grandma

My grandma used to tell me lots of stories about her life growing up. She had a really interesting life when she was young.

She used to work in a restaurant when she was a teenager. She learned how to cook traditional food. She would practice cooking at home for her whole family. She would make delicious meals, and it gave her mom time to relax.

My grandma used to go on vacation to the beach every summer. She would go surfing in the sea with her brother. She took me and my sister once and eventually taught us how to do it, too. She was a great teacher.
