Mental Health Matters: Selena Gomez Speaks Out

Selena Gomez is a singer and actress who cares deeply about mental health. She has talked openly about her struggles with depression and anxiety, especially during the pandemic. Profile

A - Ashima Shiraishi is a teenage rock climber from New York. She's one of the best young climbers of all time and she's already broken many records.

B - Shiraishi is an expert in bouldering, a type of rock climbing without ropes which involves climbing over boulders - very large rocks. You need to use special climbing shoes for the sport and it isn't for everyone because you can easily hurt yourself if you fall.

C - You don't become a talented climber like Shiraishi overnight. She first started teaching herself to rock climb in Central Park, New York, at the age of six. Her Japanese parents understood that their daughter was unusual and definitely not one of life's followers. So they organised special climbing lessons for her themselves and watched her become better and better.

D - Climbers might seem like loners, but Shiraishi has a lot of friends at school. Journalists sometimes think she's an introvert because she gives short answers to their questions. However, she's an extrovert on social media where she chats with friends and followers.

E - Shiraishi is the youngest person ever to climb some of the most difficult types of boulders in the world. She recently spent her school holidays climbing some dangerous rocks in Santa Linya in north-east Spain, where she became the first female of any age to complete the routes.

F - Teenagers like Shiraishi don't come along often - only once in a blue moon. In 2015, she was chosen by Time magazine as one of the top teenagers of the year. We're certain to see more of Shiraishi. She's already at the top of her game, but can she go any higher?

Born in Marton, near Middlesborough, Captain James Cook would go on to become one of the most famous explorers in British maritime history.

Indeed, young James’ childhood was nothing remarkable, and following his rudimentary education, Cook became an apprentice to William Sanderson, a local grocer. After 18 months working next to Staithes’ busy harbor, James felt the calling of the sea. Not wanting to stand in the young man’s way, he introduced Cook to his friend, John Walker, a ship owner from Whitby, who took him on as an apprentice seaman.

Cook lived in the Walker family house in Whitby and went to school with the other apprentices in the town. Cook worked hard and was soon serving on one of Walkers’ “cats”, the Freelove. Cats were hardy ships, built in Whitby to take coal down the coast to London. Cook was a quick learner and rapidly established himself as one of the most promising apprentices in Walker’s care.

In 1750, Cook’s apprenticeship with the Walkers ended, though he carried on working for them as a seaman. As always with Cook, it wasn’t long before he was promoted, and in 1755, he was offered the command of the Friendship, a cat he was familiar with. For many, this would have been the realization of an ambition, and they would have grasped the chance with both hands. Cook, however, wanted more than to spend his remaining years sailing in coastal waters in poor weather, so he politely turned down the Walkers’ offer and joined the Royal Navy.

I was excited when I heard my two favourite authors were writing a book together. After reading it, I found the story enjoyable, though I still think each of them (1) better individually.
