The University of Oxford, which has been around for about a thousand years, is well-known all over the world. The university has over 22,000 students, with around 12,000 undergraduates and 10,000 postgraduate students. Approximately 25% of the people living in the city of Oxford are students.
The University of Oxford is very different from other universities. Firstly, the university has more than 30 different colleges. Secondly, students wear special gowns for exams and important university events. Lastly, the degree ceremony is conducted in Latin, the language of the ancient Romans.
The university has numerous famous buildings, with two of the most famous ones being the Bodleian and the Sheldonian. The Bodleian serves as the university library and has over eleven million books. Many famous people have studied at Oxford, including David Cameron and 25 other UK prime ministers, 27 Nobel Prize winners, famous scientists like Stephen Hawking, and 120 Olympic gold medalists.
Oxford University Press, the building department of the university, sells over 10 million books each year and is famous for the Oxford English Dictionary. This dictionary contains approximately 300,000 words and weighs more than 60 kilograms.
