Before the grass has thickened on the roadside verges and leaves have started growing on the trees is a perfect time to look around and see just how dirty Britain has become. The pavements are stained with chewing gum that has been spat out and the gutters are full of discarded fast food cartons. Years ago I remember travelling abroad and being saddened by the plastic bags, discarded bottles and soiled nappies at the edge of every road. Nowadays, Britain seems to look at least as bad. What has gone wrong?

The problem is that the rubbish created by our increasingly mobile lives lasts a lot longer than before. If it is not cleared up and properly thrown away, it stays in the undergrowth for years; a semi-permanent reminder of what a tatty little country we have now.

Firstly, it is estimated that 10 billion plastic bags have been given to shoppers. These will take anything from 100 to 1,000 years to rot. However, it is not as if there is no solution to this. A few years ago, the Irish government introduced a tax on non-recyclable carrier bags and in three months reduced their use by 90%. When he was a minister, Michael Meacher attempted to introduce a similar arrangement in Britain. The plastics industry protested, of course. However, they need not have bothered; the idea was killed before it could draw breath, leaving supermarkets free to give away plastic bags.

What is clearly necessary right now is some sort of combined initiative, both individual and collective, before it is too late. The alternative is to continue sliding downhill until we have a country that looks like a vast municipal rubbish tip. We may well be at the tipping point. Yet we know that people respond to their environment. If things around them are clean and tidy, people behave cleanly and tidily. If they are surrounded by squalor, they behave squalidly. Now, much of Britain looks pretty squalid. What will it look like in five years?

Biofuels and the Environment

Leading investors have joined the growing chorus of concern about governments and companies rushing into producing biofuels as a solution for global warming, saying that many involved in the sector could be jeopardizing future profits if they do not consider the long-term impact of what they are doing carefully.

It is essential to build sustainability criteria into the supply chain of any green fuel project in order to ensure that there is no adverse effect on the surrounding environment and social structures. The report produced by the investors expresses concern that many companies may not be fully aware of the potential pitfalls in the biofuel sector.

Production of corn and soya beans has increased dramatically in the last years as an eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels but environmental and human rights campaigners are worried that this will lead to destruction of rain forests. Food prices could also go up as there is increased competition for crops as both foodstuffs and sources of fuel. Last week, the UN warned that biofuels could have dangerous side effects and said that steps need to be taken to make sure that land converted to grow biofuels does not damage the environment or cause civil unrest. There is already great concern about palm oil, which is used in many foods in addition to being an important biofuel, as rain forests are being cleared in some countries and people driven from their homes to create palm oil plantations.

An analyst and author of the investors' report say that biofuels are not a cure for climate change but they can play their part as long as governments and companies manage the social and environmental impacts thoroughly. There should also be greater measures taken to increase efficiency and to reduce demand.

Festivals come with many traditions that bring happiness and joy. However, some of these customs may not be environmentally friendly, and may need to be changed for a sustainable future. Below are three of them.

1. Balloons and sky lanterns

In countries such as China, India, and Japan, releasing balloons or sky lanterns provides a spectacular sight. They are also flown for bringing good luck and sending wishes to the sky. However, the litter left behind the balloons and lanterns is hard to decompose. The frames of the lanterns can harm wild animals, and many animals mistake the balloons for food. Lanterns also caused wildfires in the past.

2. Fireworks

3. Christmas trees

Real or fake Christmas trees are often displayed in almost every house, office, and shop during the festive season. When Christmas is over and the real trees go to landfills, they produce methane and carbon dioxide, which are two harmful greenhouse gases. Fake trees can be reused for many years, but during their production, harmful pollutants are released inta the air. And when they end in landfills, they will take hundreds of years to decompose.

The human population is always glowing, and more people means more homes, more office buildings, and more roads. All this destroys natural habitats and kills many animals. At Habitat Earth, our man goal is to conserve nature for generations to come. We are a charity organization that runs programs all across the USA to protect animals and their habitats from destruction. We currently have several campaigns to do this.

The first campaign focuses on stopping people from building things anywhere they like. For the past ten yeas, we have protested in endangered areas to help people become more aware of the damage that building projects are doing to their local environment and wildlife. This encourages local governments to pass laws to stop these projects. As long as we continue to do this, we can greatly reduce the damage to natural habitats.

The next campaign is about rescuing animals. Animas that lose then habitats to urban expansion often move into cities and cause problems for people and themselves. Our volunteers rescue these endangered animals and reintroduce than to their natural environments. As long as this work continues, these animals will not be hurt or killed.

Our final campaign is focused on teaching children about protecting the environment. Volunteers go to schools and youth centers and show children how important it is to maintain habitats. If people grow up understanding this message, they are more likely to build a better future.

Hi, everyone. I'm back home after another wonderful trip, and I want to tell you about this eco-resort that I stayed at.

 I visited a town in the north of Vietnam called Sa Pa and stayed at Cloud Ecolodge. I had a room on top of a hill that had breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys. I chose this resort because it really does a great job of supporting the three main elements of ecotourism: protecting the environment, promoting local culture and traditions, and helping to create jobs and supporting the local economy.

 First of all, Cloud Ecolodge is really eco-friendly, and it is fully carbon neutral. They keep electricity use to a minimum and there are no televisions or Wi-Fi in the rooms. Also, though there are great swimming pools and a spa where you can relax, all are powered by solar energy.

Next, they offer some excellent eco-friendly activities. They offer tours around the local village markets, and hiking and cycling tours around the area where you can learn about the local culture and see some beautiful traditional homes.

Finally, the resort hires employees entirely from the local area. The people they hire often don't have much education, but they're given hospitality and language training to improve their skills. The resort also has a really eco-friendly restaurant. They get most of their food from local markets and farms, so it’s really fresh, and all the food waste is sent to local forms to use as animal feed.

Overall, I loved my time there, and I think it’s the best resort I've reviewed so far. Let me know about which eco-resorts you've stayed at in the comments below. Maybe I could review those next.

Powering the Future

As we continue to face the impacts of climate change, having a green environment has become increasingly important to the future of our society. To achieve this, the world is shifting towards green energy, and two particular types of energy at the centre of this movement are solar power and wind power.

Solar power is all about harnessing the energy of the sun by using solar panels to convert sunlight into usable electricity. This highly efficient form of energy produces zero emissions, so it can significantly reduce our carbon footprint. Moreover, solar panels are perfect for installation on a small scale, such as in private homes, since they require very little maintenance and have a long lifespan. However, the ability to generate solar power depends on the time of day and weather conditions. This means that solar panels are often less useful it they are installed in places where sunny weather is not typical.

Wind power, on the other hand, involves converting the energy of the wind into electricity using large turbines. Wind power doesn't produce any greenhouse gases, but it is not ideal for private use since turbines require consistent care. However, wind farms can be installed on a large scale and are able to produce electricity continuously regardless of the time of day. This means that if there were more investments in wind power, it could be a viable way to provide energy for major cities and even for whole regions.

Wind and solar power contribute significantly to a green environment by reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, helping us cut down on pollution and slow climate change. Additionally, using renewable energy sources helps promote spending on sustainable development by creating new career opportunities in the green energy sector.

For now, the biggest challenge of adopting green energy is the costs associated with installation and infrastructure, but the benefits unquestionably outweigh the downsides. If we want to stop the climate crisis and create a better and more sustainable future, green energy sources will undoubtedly be the key.

Urbanisation is happening at a rapid pace all over the world. Cities are growing, and increasing populations can have potentially negative effects. So. how can cities plan for such rapid growth?

DISASTER MOVIES BASED ON TRUE STORIES

A THE IMPOSSIBLE

The film is based on the story of a Spanish family who went on a Christmas holiday to Khao Lak in Thailand in 2004 and were caught up in the tsunami that hit Southeast Asia, killing 230,000 people in fourteen countries.

The filming of the tsunami itself is spectacular and uses a mixture of digital effects and real waves filmed in slow motion in a water tank.

Most of the film deals with the aftermath of the tsunami and the agony suffered by the family when they are split up and have no idea whether the others have survived.

In the film, the family are British, with Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor giving honest and compassionate performances as the parents of three young boys. The director, Juan Antonio Bayona, wanted the film to be as realistic as possible, so the actors had to spend five weeks of physically demanding filming in a massive water tank.

The Impossible tells a captivating true story in which survival, society, family ties and human kindness all shine through.

The Impossible is an amazing film, but it made me question how sensible it is to develop tourism in areas that are likely to suffer natural disasters. Isn't it too risky?

B THE BOY WHO HARNESSED THE WIND

Set in Africa, the film tells story of Malawian inventor William Kamkwamba. When he was just fourteen years old, he saved his family and village from famine by building an electricity-generating windmill from spare parts, working from rough plans he found in a library book. The film explores a community facing extreme poverty and hunger. Although the Kamkwamba family is struggling to survive, the parents do their best to focus. on their children's education, but William is forced to leave school when the family can no longer afford the school fees. The film is directed by and stars Chiwetel Ejiofor who spent a decade getting to know the Malawi people and learning their language. He uses subtitles so that the characters in the film mostly speak Chichewa, the Malawian language, and this is one of the reasons why the characters are so believable,

Drought and the underlying issues of deforestation, colonialism and climate change are dealt with in detail. But the movie ends on a positive note, with science-obsessed William Kamkwamba saving his village, bringing them electricity and more importantly, water.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind shows yet again how unfair life is and how important it is for rich countries to help people in poor countries to survive.
