Văn Miếu - The Temple of Literature

The Temple of Literature - Văn Miếu - is in Hà Nội. It is at the corner of Nguyễn Thái Học Street, Tôn Đức Thắng Street and Quốc Tử Giám Street. King Lý Thánh Tông built the temple in 1070 to worship Confucius. Six years later, King Lý Nhân Tông built a school - Quốc Tử Giám - behind the Temple to teach members of the royal family. In 1253, King Trần Thái Tông opened the school to everybody and made it a place for all talented people. In 1484, King Lê Thánh Tông started to build stone stelae on tortoises to honor the most outstanding doctors. Today, students often visit the temple before exams. They come here and show respect to the tortoises. They believe that it will bring luck and help them do better in exams.

Today we spoke to Jacques. He's from France. He's currently here in America on a one-year study program. Here's what he told us.

" Many students study overseas. They can learn about the culture. They can also test their language skills. However, being away from home can be hard. The food is different, but trying new things can be a great adventure. Although studying abroad can be scary, you can keep in contact with your friends and family on social media. You can make lots of new friends. You can discover new hobbies, too. "

Jacques said he loves America. He has another four months here.

Let me tell you about my school year. I had good test results in January. I was really pleased because I studied really hard before the tests. My favorite thing this yearwas the project I did in history about the USA.

This year, I did some really good presentations. I was quite surprised because I don't like talking in class very much. My best presentation was about my study abroad trip. I went to Spain for three weeks. I loved it!

This year, I had some positives and negatives at school. I failed some tests, so I was disappointed. I was pleased when I was made leader of the school soccer team. Then, I was delighted because the team won the schools' soccer competition!
