The H❜mông Culture
The H'mông people are an important community in the ethnic minority groups in Việt Nam. There are more than one million H'mông people in Việt Nam today, living mainly in the mountainous regions in the north such as Sơn La, Lào Cai, and Hà Giang.
The H'mong people have a very distinctive culture that is different from other ethnic groups. One of the most interesting cultures is the Tết of the H'mông. This is an event that starts from November 30th of the lunar calendar every year, one month before Vietnamese New Year.
During the spring festival, local people make traditional cakes from corn and rice flour such as Bánh Giày (round sticky rice cake) or Mèn Mén. Young people wear colorful traditional costumes and play traditional games to celebrate the festival.
The life of the H'mông people is deeply connected to the “Khèn” (panpipe), a unique musical instrument. The H'mông people make Khèn from six bamboo tubes. Khèn is the soul of the H'mông ethnic group because they use this instrument to sing songs at important events. Men play it to express love to their girls. Through time, the H'mông people try to preserve their unique cultures and traditions.
