The Globe theatre then and now
William Shakespeare was the writer of some of the most famous plays of all time. He wrote Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Macbeth over 500 years ago. He was also an actor and he appeared in some of his own theatre performances. Actors performed a lot of his plays in the Globe Theatre in London. But in 1613, a fire destroyed the theatre. They built another one, but another fire destroyed that one, too. Towards the end of the 20th century, they started to build another Globe, and in 1997, it opened in London. Its name is Shakespeare's Globe. It looks a lot like the old Globe, but there are some differences. The new Globe has lights for performances at night. There are also more fire exits this time, so it is safer if there is a fire. People consider the new Globe as a living monument to Shakespeare, the greatest English playwright. You can visit the theatre and see some of his most popular plays.
