Career Preparation
Although you may think you are too young to worry about your future career, it is important that you start thinking about your life after high school right now so that you can take the steps necessary to any career you may choose. Some of these steps include choosing the right high school, enrolling in the necessary courses, earning good grades, getting work experience and building a resume. It can seem overwhelming trying to choose a career before you complete high school, but always keep in mind that it is never too late to change your career path and no one says you have to decide now.
There are lots of different factors that go into choosing a career path. To determine the occupation you want to enter, you need to consider your interests, how long you want to be in school, how much money you want to make, the type of work you want to do, the potential for job growth and job trends in the industry – sounds like a lot, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Each day you make many decisions - what to wear, who to hang out with, how to spend your time after school. Some of the decisions you make today can affect you for the rest of your life. Once you have figured out the things you like to do and the things you do well, you can begin exploring careers that include your interests and skills. Make a plan from the beginning, and once you have a plan, work the plan. Do the steps along the way each year to keep on track toward graduation and higher education.

If your application indicates that you are qualified, the employer may request an interview. The interview enables you to learn more about the job. It also helps the employer find out if you are the best person for the job. Many people prepare for an interview by learning about the employer’s business. You can find such information in an organization’s annual report or on its website. This kind of knowledge can help you ask intelligent questions during your interview. It also shows the interviewer that you are interested in the employer’s business. Most interviewers pay close attention to the way an applicant acts, dresses and answers questions. You can make a good impression by arriving on time and by being confident, prepared and well-organized. Your clothing should be clean, comfortable and professional. Wear the kinds of clothes appropriate to the company, unless the workers wear uniforms. The interviewer will probably ask about your interests, your work experience and your goals. Answer all questions briefly. You should also prepare questions to ask the interviewer about the company and the position you are seeking. Send a follow-up letter to everyone who interviewed you no later than two days after the interview. In the letter, thank the interviewer for the time spent discussing the position with you. Let the interviewer know if you are still interested in the job.

Which Jobs Is Right for You?
You shouldn’t worry if you don’t know what job you want to have. Most young people feel the same way.
However, we have to get a job if we want to have enough money to buy things and support a family.
Thinking about these things could help you choose that job:
• Personality – Being happy in your job is very important. If you know what you like (or don’t like), you can understand which jobs are right for you. Don’t choose a job just because of the money.
• Working style – You might enjoy working on a large team or alone. If you know the way you like to work, it could help you decide which type of job will suit you.
• Working environment – Maybe you work best in an office, or maybe outside. If you have an understanding of where you work best, you can expect to find jobs with the right working environment for you.
• Career test – If you like the idea of someone giving you career advice, you could always take an online career test. These tests are free, convenient, and widely available. When you complete the test, a report tells you the most suitable jobs for you.

MY DREAM JOB
Hello, readers! Today, the careers advisor at my school talked to my class about different jobs, and I was really interested in the job of a 3D printing technician. The careers advisor said that 3D printing technicians used 3D printers to make things. The reason I like this job is that I love technology. However, it’s not an easy job. 3D printing technicians need to be hard-working, patient and careful because they make objects that require high accuracy, like teeth, hearing aids and car parts. Moreover, they often have to work quickly and effectively, so they need to have problem-solving skills, time management skills and creativity. I am willing to do what it takes, though.
Hi, Polly! Andrew here. Your future job sounds interesting! My dream job is to be a video game developer. My school’s careers advisor said that the job was about designing and creating video games. I think it’s prefect for me because I love video games. It’s not just fun and games, though. Video games developers need to have strong IT skills and lots of creativity because they work with computers to create characters and stories for the games. They also need to be hard-working, flexible and punctual because game development projects often have tight deadlines.

Hi Matt,
What are you going to do in the summer? I’m going to Greece. My uncle is starting an open air cinema this summer and I’m going to help sell tickets. My uncle lives next to the sea, so I’ll be able to swim every day. I’ll probably spend my mornings on the beach with my cousins and then I’ll work with my uncle in the evenings. My flight is on the day after we finish school and I fly back to the UK on 30 August. I’m going to miss hanging out with my friends, but I won’t miss the British weather! I’ll send you a postcard from
Greece!
Bye for now,
Dimitris
Dimitris)
