WORKING HARD TO HELP

The Association in Support of Vietnamese Handicapped and Orphans (ASVHO) is anorganisation that works to make the lives of orphans (children without parents) and disabled people in Vietnam better. Started in 1992, ASVHO helps these people with medical treatments, transport and places to live. Over the years, ASVHO has raised money and provided support to these people. This support includes providing important surgery and buying wheelchairs for disabled people. The organisation also donates bicycles to orphans and gives financial support for their education. One of ASVHO’s goals is to help these people live as independently as possible. It achieves this by creating housing communities and offering training that can lead to job opportunities.

ASVHO works with the Vietnamese government to protect the rights of the disabled and orphans as well as create policies that help improve their quality of life. Every year, it organises events for them to show their talents and develop their skills. These events encourage disabled people and orphans to be part of the community. One popular event is a singing competition where disabled people from all over Vietnam compete, and the best performers receive medals. Another successful event is the Vietnam Disabled People’s Day which improves understanding across the country of the problems disabled people face. The work of ASVHO is an important support to the disabled and orphan community. For more information, visit asvho.vn.

2. Saving Trees across the World

(Giải cứu cây xanh trên toàn thế giới)

Richard Baker and Josiah Njonjo started the charity Men of the Trees in 1922 in Kenya in Africa. Its aim was to show people how important trees are for life on Earth. The charity changed its name from Men of the Trees to the International Tree Foundation (ITF) in 1992.

The ITF has worked hard for many years to protect the world's forests. It has supported community tree planting projects in more than 30 countries around the world. It has also helped with conservation in places like the Amazon rainforest. As part of this work, it even bought land for planting trees there in the 1990s. Teaching young people about forest conservation has always been important for the ITF. It has organized summer schools, events, and competitions for children in many different countries. In the UK, it helped set up National Tree Week. This event has become very popular with young people. It has continued every year since 1975.

In Australia, Trees for Life started in 1981 after a visit from Richard Baker. Its aim is to help people in South Australia with conservation of plants and trees. Since 1981, it has grown over 35 million trees! It has over two thousand volunteers and over one hundred educational events every month. Their events have helped raise people's awareness about Australia's plants, trees, and animals.

Minh Phan, November 1st

A 23-year-old Vietnamese man has raised nearly 135 million VND for charity after completing a 1,700 km walk from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. B.N.Q. started his journey on May 25th, 2020 and reached the capital in just 45 days. The young man thought it was one of the most amazing experiences of his life. “I wanted to do something meaningful for me, for my life,” he said. He started the expedition without any money in his pocket. “Making the journey without money was a really hard challenge,” he added. The young man said he often washed dishes or worked in restaurant kitchens or at people's houses in return for some food. At night, he often slept on park benches. Seven days into his travels, Q. decided his journey would be meaningful if he did something for the community. He posted the idea on a social media website to call for donations. By the time his charity walk finished, he had raised nearly 135 million VND. He decided to use the money to help build classrooms for poor children in Lai Châu, a province in the northwest of Vietnam. “I want to inspire young people to live a meaningful life by doing little but kind things,” he said.
