Kattenstoet Festival

Kattenstoet Festival

The nomadic life of Mongolian

Mongolian people nowadays still maintain their tradition of a nomadic life. About half of Mongolian population do not settle down but travel from place to place every season. When you think of Mongolian nomads, you think of animal farmers. Their most valuable possessions are their tents and cattle. Mongolia has a severe weather. There are dramatic changed in weather conditions between seasons. That is why Mongolian have to move location throughout the year to the most appropriate spots. In winter, they often move in front of a mountain for shelter. in spring, it’s closer to a river, in summer right next to a river for water supply, and in autumn up a hill to collect hay for winter time. Most nomads move at least four times a year but some might move up to 30 times in a year, especially if they have a lot of animals that eat through the available food quickly.

The number of nomads has, however, significantly decreased over the last years. More and more of its citizens move to Ulaanbaatar because they want to look for an education and a professional job. Mongolia is in a period of rapid change.

Ethnic Groups

Vietnam is a multi-nationality country with 54 ethnic groups. The Viet (Kinh) people account for 87% of the country’s Population and mainly inhabit the Red River delta, the central coastal delta, the Mekong delta and major cities. The other 53 ethnic minority groups, totaling over 8 million people, are scattered over mountain areas (covering two-thirds of the country’s territory) spreading from the North to the South.

Among ethnic minorities, the most populated are Tay, Thai, Muong, Hoa, Khmer, Nung... with a population of around 1 million each, while the least populated are Brau, Roman, Odu with several hundred people each.

 

A number of ethnic minorities had mastered some farming techniques. They grew rice plants in swamped paddy fields and carried out irrigation. Others went hunting, fishing, collecting and lived a semi-nomadic life. Each group has its own culture, diverse and special. Beliefs and religions of the Vietnamese ethnic minority groups were also disparate from each other.

Stilt houses

Stilt houses are popular among different ethnic minority groups, from the Thai in the Northern Highlands to the Khmer in the Mekong Delta. The houses come in different sizes and styles, and show the traditional culture of their owners.

Stilt houses are made from natural materials like wood, bamboo, and leaves. They stand on strong posts, about two or three metres above the ground. This allows them to keep people safe from wild animals. People climb a seven- or nine-step staircase to enter the house. The most important place in the house is the kitchen. It has an open fire in the middle of the house. It is the place for family gatherings and receiving guests.

The stilt houses of the Tay and Nung usually overlook a field. The stilt houses of the Thai, however, face mountains or a forest. The Bahnar and Ede have a communal house (called a Rong house) as the heart of their village. These communal houses are the largest and tallest ones in the village.

The Cham are an (1)                        group in Vietnam. Their population is about 180,000 people (2019). They mainly live in Central and Southern Vietnam, in provinces such as Ninh Thuan and An Giang.

The Chăm are very talented at making crafts. The Cham in Ninh Thuận are especially famous for their pottery products. They make everything by hand. The Cham women make pottery, and the men help them by collecting wood.

The Cham in An Giang, on the other hand, make beautiful cloth. The cloth has traditional patterns such as squares, clouds, flowers, etc. A special piece of cloth can take up to 15 days to make. An experienced Chăm woman can make enough cloth for one simple skirt each day.

The Cham wear simple but pretty clothesBoth men and women wear long skirts with shirts. In Central Vietnam, Chăm men wear white headscarves. The women wear long shirts, similar to áo dài, and belts over their shoulders and across their bodiesIn Southern Vietnam, Cham men wear hats instead of scarves, and the women cover their hair with long scarves.

The Thái

Vietnamese Customs

What should you do when you visit a different country? It's important to know their customs and you need to respect the local people. Read on to 1)                         about some customs in Vietnam.

Greetings

Most people greet each other by shaking hands or bowing their head slightly with a smile.

Eating and drinking

Ethnic groups in Việt Nam

There are many different ethnic groups with their own customs in Việt Nam. Let’s learn about two of these groups.

Ba Na people

Ba Na people are age ethnic group in the Central Highlands of Việt Nam. They live in stilt houses off the ground and they speak the Ba Na language. Their traditional clothes are in dark colours with white and red patterns. The Lúa Mới Festival (the New Rice Festival) is their most important festival. It takes place before the Lunar New Year and they pray for good weather for their crops.

H'Mông people

H’Mông people are large ethnic group in northern Việt Nam. Their villages are in the high mountains and they live in houses on the ground. They speak the H’Mông language. Different groups of H’Mông people wear different traditional clothes like black, white, green and many more colours. Their biggest festival is the Gầu Tào Festival. Gầu Tào means ‘playing outside’ in H’Mông language. This festival takes place in the twelfth lunar month and they pray for good health and happiness.

Aday folk singing

The Khmer ethnic group in Xà Phiên commune, Long Mỹ district, Hậu Giang province há a tradition of Aday folk singing. This art has been regarded as a national intangible cultural heritage. The tradition dates back a long time ago. Khmer men and women often wear traditional mao (hats) and special costumes and they perform duet singing during community festivals and family celebrations. The songs are often about love, nature and the good. Singing and performing musical instruments make this type of art special. In recent days, there are many classes for the public to join and learn about this traditional form of art.

Khơ Mú dance

The Khơ Mú is one of the oldest groups in the northern mountainous province of Lai Châu. In tratiditonal costumes, Khơ Mú people dance to wish for good health, bumper crops and favourable weather. Their dance movements are strong and they dance to the sounds of the drum and groups.

Bac Ha Sunday Fair

Bac Ha Sunday Fair in Lao Cai is the largest and most colourful highland market in Viet Nam. Every Sunday, the market is crowded with minority people from villages far and near. The Flower Hmong, Tay, Nung, Dao, and other ethnic groups come wearing their colourful traditional costumes. They come on foot or on horseback, bringing with them anything they can exchange. These goods may be vegetables and fruits they grow in their gardens or medicinal plants they gather from the forests and mountains. They also sell other items like the clothing they weave or silver jewellery they make. The market has a large place to sell poultry and animals like chickens, ducks, dogs, buffaloes, and horses.

Bac Ha Sunday Fair is also a place for people to meet and chat. After they finish their market activities, they gather around a big hot pan of thang co, a famous traditional Hmong food from horse meat. Young people come there with the hope of finding a lover.
