a Gerund (V-ing) is used as a noun in a sentence.

Doing yoga is my favourite activity.

He suggested eating out this weekend.

What I really like is reading books.

Listening to music is my enjoyable pastime.

b Present participle (V-ing) is used as a verb in a sentence.

Feeling thirsty, he looked for something to drink.

I heard my son playing the piano in his room.

c Perfect gerund (Having + past participle) is used to emphasize a past action.

The man was accused of having hunted in the National Park illegally.

d Perfect participle (Having + past participle) is used when one action is followed by another with the same subject. It emphasizes that the first action is complete before the second one starts.

Having searched for the route carefully, the man started his journey.

Perfect gerunds / Perfect participles

Perfect gerunds

Form: having + past participle

We use perfect gerunds as objects after certain verbs or verbs and prepositions to indicate completed past actions and these actions happen before the ones by the main verbs.

The children admitted having used the mobile phone at bedtime.

Perfect gerunds are used:

• after some verbs such as deny, admit, mention, recall, regret, remember, forget.

She denied having cancelled his gym membership.

• after some verbs and prepositions such as apologise... for, accuse... of, admire ... for, blame... for, congratulate... on, praise... for, thank... for

Peter thanked his sister for having given him the book about yoga.

Perfect participles

Form: having + past participle

We use perfect participles to indicate an action completed and happened before another one in the past.

Having finished her yoga exercise, my sister went to bed. (My sister finished her yoga exercise and then she went to bed.)

Notes:

The verbs must have the same subject.

The perfect participles are put at the beginning of the sentences.
