RULES (Quy tắc)

1. The word order is usually the same / different in direct and reported questions.

2. The tense changes / stays the same in reported questions.

3. We can use if or whether to report all questions / Yes/No questions.

4. We use Wh- words to report all questions / Wh-questions.

Reported speech (Questions)

When we change direct questions to reported questions:

- we usually use ask to introduce reported questions.

- we change the word order from the question form to the statement form.

- we change verb tenses, pronouns/possessive adjectives, time words/phrases and other expressions.

Yes-No questions: We use if or whether to introduce reported questions.

“Do you want the job?” she asked me. -> She asked me if/whether I wanted the job.

Wh- questions: We use the same question words in direct questions to introduce reported questions.

“What are your strengths?” the careers advisor asked me.

The career advisor asked me what my strengths were.

Khi chúng ta thay đổi câu hỏi trực tiếp thành câu hỏi tường thuật:

- chúng ta thường dùng Ask để giới thiệu câu hỏi tường thuật.

- Chúng ta thay đổi trật tự từ từ dạng câu hỏi sang dạng câu khẳng định.

- chúng tôi thay đổi thì của động từ, đại từ/tính từ sở hữu, từ/cụm từ chỉ thời gian và các cách diễn đạt khác.

Câu hỏi Có-Không: Chúng ta sử dụng if hoặc có để giới thiệu câu hỏi tường thuật.

“Bạn có muốn công việc này không?” cô ấy hỏi tôi. -> Cô ấy hỏi tôi liệu tôi có muốn công việc đó không.

Câu hỏi Wh-: Chúng ta sử dụng những từ để hỏi giống nhau trong câu hỏi trực tiếp để giới thiệu câu hỏi tường thuật.

"Thế mạnh của bạn là gì?" cố vấn nghề nghiệp hỏi tôi.

Người cố vấn nghề nghiệp hỏi tôi điểm mạnh của tôi là gì.
