Sally suggested (that) I go in July.

(Sally gợi ý (rằng) tôi nên đi vào tháng Bảy.)

said (that) + subject + should/shouldn't + bare infinitive (in the suggestions has should)

(said (that) + chủ ngữ + should/shouldn’t + nguyên thể (trong gợi ý có Should))

"You should try the dumplings at Presgo," Adam said to us. Adam said (that) we should try the dumplings at Presgo.

(Bạn nên thử món bánh bao ở Presgo," Adam nói với chúng tôi. Adam nói (rằng) chúng ta nên thử bánh bao ở Presgo.)

Reported speech (Statements)

We use reported speech to report what someone said. We can use that to introduce reported speech, but we can omit that.

When we change direct speech to reported speech:

- we change verb tenses when the introductory verb (say, tell, ask, etc.) is in a past tense.

Kim told me, “I’m interested in vertical farming”

Kim told me (that) she was interested in vertical farming.

- we change pronouns/possessive adjectives according to the context.

He said, “Good time management skills help me work smarter.”

He said (that) good time management skills helped him work smarter.

- we change time words/phrases and other expressions according to the context.

She said to me, “I’m studying English now.”

She said to me (that) she was studying English then.

Chúng ta sử dụng câu tường thuật để tường thuật điều ai đó đã nói. Chúng ta có thể sử dụng điều đó để giới thiệu lời tường thuật, nhưng chúng ta có thể bỏ qua điều đó.

Khi chúng ta chuyển lời nói trực tiếp sang lời nói gián tiếp:

- chúng ta đổi thì của động từ khi động từ giới thiệu (say, Tell, Ask, v.v.) ở thì quá khứ.
