This is Mr. Cooper. His first name is Matthew. Mr. Cooper was born in Australia, but now he lives in Manchester, in the UK. His parents live in Australia. He is a teacher. He loves teaching English. He also likes math. He isn't married. He shares a flat with a friend. Every day, Mr. Cooper gets up at 6:30 a.m. He always has cereals for breakfast and he drinks coffee. He catches a bus to school. He always wears a shirt and smart trousers for school. Sometimes, he wears a tie. In the evenings, Mr. Cooper usually goes to the gym. On Saturdays, he goes to visit friends in the town center. On Sundays, he always marks books and prepares lessons. Sometimes, on Saturday evenings, he likes a good night out! He goes to Chinatown and he has a nice Chinese meal with his mates. He saves money every month because he wants to go to Australia in the summer to visit his mum and dad. He is a really nice guy!

School days in the UK

Michael gets up at 7:30 a.m. and has his breakfast. His best friend, Ben, lives next door, so they walk to school together. They are in the same class at Greenwood Primary School. There are 30 students in their class. All students wear a school uniform.

The students have registration at 8:45 a.m. and lessons start at 9:00 a.m. There is a short break at 10:30 a.m. and a lunch break at 12:30 p.m. Michael brings a packed lunch from home, but Ben buys a hot school dinner from the canteen.

In the afternoon, there are lessons again from 1:15 p.m. to 3:40 p.m. When school finishes, Michael and Ben have football practice because they play for the school team. At 4:30 p.m., Michael and Ben walk back home.

Michael takes a shower and does his homework. He has dinner at 7:00 p.m. with his family. Then, he chats online. He goes to bed at 9:30 p.m.

“You don't help at home!” “You spend all your time with your friends - we never see you!” “This is a house, not a hotel!” My parents often say these things to my sister Cara and me.

But they don't say anything about George's bad habits! George sleeps all day – he doesn't do anything! When my parents come home in the evening, George wakes up, washes and gets something to eat. After that he goes out and doesn't come back all night!

In the morning when I leave for school, George walks back into the house and falls asleep. But my parents never say to George, “This is a house, not a hotel!”. In fact, Mum says he's the perfect cat!

My day

I wake up at seven o'clock, have a shower and then have breakfast: bread, cheese and yoghurt. After that I go to school.

School starts at eight thirty every day. We have lunch at eleven o'clock and at two o'clock we go home.

After school I do my homework - I'm in Grade 7, so there's a lot of homework now! My parents come home at four o'clock and then we have dinner - meat or fish and potatoes. After that I often meet my friends and we play computer games. In winter I usually stay at home because it's cold and dark. We read or we chat by the fire. I go to bed at ten o'clock.

In Norway school starts at eight thirty. In some areas in Việt Nam it starts at seven thirty.

A cold walk to school for the children of Oymyakon

Oymyakon is a village in northeast Siberia, Russia. It's very cold.

In Oymyakon, the school only closes when the temperature is -52°C! The children often walk in snow, but it's dangerous to be so cold.

In summer, the day is twenty-one hours long, but in winter, it's only three hours long. It's dark when the children walk to and from school.

The children get up early and it's important to wear lots of clothes to keep warm. They wear their school uniforms and they put on jumpers, boots, hats, scarves, gloves and coats.

At school, the children all have classes and in the break, the boys and girls play, or chat with friends. When school finishes, it's time to start their long and difficult journey again.
